In the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, Mission, Texas provides a quaint oasis for families, tourists, and winter inhabitants. Founded in 1908, Mission is a vibrant part of the greater McAllen-Edinberg metropolitan area. With over 80,000 people, it sits in the southern tip of Texas in Hidalgo County. Because of its location, this traditional old town boasts warm weather year round, boulevards lined with palm trees, and makes a perfect destination for winter vacations or winter rentals. Lovingly known as “Home of the Ruby Red Grapefruit”, Mission remains a prime location for citrus growers and features an annual hometown parade celebrating the area’s rich culture.
Throughout the year, one of the largest viewable collections of butterflies in the United States can be seen at the 100-acre National Butterfly Center. In addition, nature abounds at the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, site of the World Birding Center. For the active set, four world-class golf courses reside here that enjoy perfect weather year-round.
With plenty to keep busy, Mission is the perfect getaway. Many retirees call this place home for the winters because of the temperate weather and lush environment. As of February 2016, 31 new homes were constructed and on the market. Most are additions to housing developments, list at $130k and up, and sit just north of the scenic Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park.
